Type, Cited and Figured Specimens
IntroductionThe fossil collections held by Dinosaur Isle are of local, national and international importance. In places the fossil fauna, and flora, of the Isle of Wight is unique; and a number of the geological exposures are protected under law by listing as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), or by identification as a Regionally Important Geological site (RIG). A number of fossils from the Isle of Wight have become the master, or type, specimen and have appeared in research papers or other publications. Other specimens have been considered important enough for researchers to publish detailed works. The former Museum of Isle of Wight Geology published a paper catalogue of these important specimens some years ago. Now the catalogue has been updated, and for the first time is available on-line. If you wish to publish on one of our specimens please contact the Museum (details below). |
About the cataloguesWelcome Over ten years have passed since the publication of the first ever Type, Figured and Cited Specimens list of the Isle of Wight Council Geological Collection (Radley, 1996). Since then the collections have continued to increase in size and most importantly many new additions have been of sufficient importance to warrant publication. Furthermore, the publication of Dinosaurs of the Isle of Wight (Martill and Naish, 2001) resulted in the figuring of 64 specimens from the collection. The net result is that in the ten year period from 1996 to 2006 the number of status specimens grew from 65 to 228. In 2006 a new version of the Type and Figured Catalogue was produced after extensive research by former Curator Dr Martin Munt. Since then a number of further articles have been published and are being added to this webpage. We are grateful to Dr Lorna Steel and Dr Jerry Hooker of the Natural History Museum, London; and Dr David Martill of the University of Portsmouth for providing updates. Catalogues by J.F. Jackson (1925, 1928, 1929, 1930a, 1930b, 1933, 1938) remain an excellent secondary source of information on our collections. These were published by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. Many of the dinosaur fossils were listed as an appendix in Martill and Naish (2001). This webpage is currently being written up as a working document, along with background information on the history of the collection and its collectors. At some point that document will be available for download from this webpage. It will be a working document and we hope to update it as further research is published. Specimens in the collection have two prefixes, MIWG and IWCMS. These have occasionally been miss-quoted in publications. As a guide an MIWG will be followed by a full stop then a number; IWCMS by a space then a year date, full stop then a number (e.g. IWCMS 1994.100). MIWG stands for Museum of Isle of Wight Geology, IWCMS for Isle of Wight County Museums Service (a Museum Documentation Association [MDA] code from 1994 onwards). Authors contemplating publishing specimens in our collections are advised to seek our advice before publication with respect to numbering. Using the catalogues The catalogue has a simple layout, Part 1 comprises Dinosaur specimens and footprint casts assigned to Dinosaurs. Part 2 covers the rest of the collection. Part 1 has a simple taxonomic division, then alphabetical by name, subsequently numeric. Part 2 is firstly stratigraphical, then simple organism group (i.e. fish), then alphabetical, finally, numeric. STATUS OF DATA. Both Parts have now been loaded from the original 2006 paper copy.
Since then, further updates of four new articles on Dinosaur material, papers on a Palaeogene mammal and Lower Cretaceous pterosaur bone have been added; plus two articles on a new pterosaur humerus and an insect wing from the Lower Cretaceous. During 2006 Iguanodon atherfieldensis found itself the subject of a proposal to rename it as Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis. In 2010 a paper was published which references a number of pterosaur teeth in the collection and a possible pterosaur ungual phalange. A paper by Jon Radley on Viviparus fluviorum was added. Further research on some small lizards from the north coast was published in 2010. Then in July 2011 the entire set of data was put into alpha-numerical order. During September 2011 many names had additional information added to identify the author and date when species were erected. In September 2011 research into an old specimen identified a possible new sauropod dinosaur. A recent paper on Valdosaurus has added to our knowledge, and that information is being added; in addition this paper identifies a possible tentative dinosaur within the Dryosauridae. In late 2011 a new publication on English Wealden Fossils was produced and the material referenced in this will be added to this page. Further papers on a Cretaceous turtle and Palaeogene crustaceans have also been listed, as has a paper on a Plesiosaur in the collection that has become a new holotype. During 2013 work was published which grouped Eotyrannus with a number of early tyrannosaurids. A number of new items are yet to be listed here, but as May 2015 approached we can add to our list a partial pterosaur rostrum from Coloborhynchus. During July 2015 a number of bone histology slides were assessed and numbered, with a previously un-numbered thin-section of sauropod dinosaur vertebra in a Robin Reid paper now being catalogued. During 2016 research was published on the most complete Valdosaurus partial skeleton yet found in articulation. In 2017 the focus was on the theropod dinosaur Neovenator again

A downloadable catalogue is currently being created; we aim to make this available as a pdf file. |
